Web Development Services in India: What You Actually Get

I get a version of this call every month. Someone has three quotes in front of them — ₹22,000, ₹65,000 and ₹1,80,000 — for what they described identically to all three developers. They want to know which one is honest. Usually all three are. They are just quoting different jobs. The phrase "web development services" has no fixed meaning in India. It can mean installing a theme and changing the logo. It can mean eleven weeks of design, custom back-end work and integration testing. Until you can name the components, you cannot compare the prices, and you will end up choosing on gut feeling or on whoever answered the phone fastest. So here is the full component list. The eight things that make up a web development project 1. Discovery and requirements Someone sits down with you and works out what the site needs to do, who it is for, what happens when a visitor arrives, and what counts as success. The output is a written scope — a page list, a feature list, and an explicit statement of what is out of scope. This phase gets skipped constantly, and skipping it is the single most expensive decision in the whole project. A site built from a WhatsApp conversation gets rebuilt. Budget one to two days of someone's attention for a business site, more for anything with logins or payments. Worth: ₹5,000–₹25,000, usually folded into the quote rather than itemised. 2. Design Wireframes first — grey boxes showing where things sit — then visual design applied to every page type. Not just the homepage. The inside pages are where visitors spend their time and where most quotes quietly assume "we'll use the same layout". Ask specifically how many page designs are included. "Complete website design" often means one homepage design and a generic inner-page template. Worth: ₹15,000–₹1,00,000 depending on whether it is a customised theme or drawn from scratch. 3. Front-end build The design turned into working HTML, CSS and JavaScript that behaves correctly on a 360-pixel-wide Android screen, a tablet and a 27-inch monitor. This is where corners get cut most invisibly. A site can look perfect in the screenshot the developer sends and fall apart on a real phone. Worth: ₹15,000–₹80,000. 4. Back-end and CMS The part that lets you change content without calling anyone. WordPress, a custom PHP or Laravel admin, or a headless CMS. The question that matters is not which system but how much of your site you can actually edit through it. Plenty of "WordPress sites" are built so that the homepage content is hard-coded and you cannot touch it. Ask: "Which parts of this site can I edit myself after launch?" Get the answer before the build, not during the handover call. Worth: ₹10,000–₹1,50,000. 5. Integrations Contact forms that actually deliver, WhatsApp click-to-chat, Google Maps, payment gateways, CRM connections, appointment booking, email marketing tools, live chat. Each one is a small project with its own testing. Two integrations is normal for a business site. Six changes the price bracket. Write yours down before you ask for quotes. Worth: ₹2,000–₹30,000 each. 6. Testing Cross-browser, cross-device, form submission, broken link check, load speed, and — the one everyone forgets — what the site does when someone enters bad data or the form fails. If a developer's process has no testing phase, you are the testing phase. Worth: ₹5,000–₹40,000. 7. Deployment and technical SEO setup Hosting configured, SSL installed, domain pointed, sitemap generated, robots.txt written, Search Console and Analytics connected, schema markup added, redirects from any old URLs. That last item — redirects — destroys more search traffic in India than anything else I see. A business gets a new website, the old URLs are not mapped to the new ones, and three years of accumulated Google rankings evaporate in a fortnight. It takes an hour to prevent and months to recover from. Worth: ₹5,000–₹25,000. 8. Handover Admin training, a short written guide, and transfer of everything: domain registrar login, hosting login, CMS admin, source code, design files. Worth: should be free, frequently is not, occasionally is refused. See the section on ownership below. What each tier actually costs Web development services in India — scope and cost, 2026 Tier Cost What is genuinely included Timeline Theme setup ₹15,000 – ₹35,000 Premium theme, logo and colours, 5–6 pages, contact form 1–2 weeks Customised build ₹40,000 – ₹90,000 Theme heavily modified, 8–12 pages, CMS, 2–3 integrations, basic SEO setup 3–4 weeks Custom development ₹1,00,000 – ₹3,00,000 Designed from scratch, custom back-end, multiple integrations, full testing 6–10 weeks Web application ₹3,00,000+ User accounts, roles, dashboards, business logic 3 months+ The gap between rows two and three is where most disagreements live. A business pays ₹60,000 expecting row three and receives row two. Neither side lied; nobody defined the row. Six questions that expose a thin scope Ask these before you compare prices. The answers take ten minutes to collect and will reorder your shortlist. 1. "How many pages are included, and what happens if I need a tenth?" A real answer includes a per-page rate. 2. "Which parts can I edit myself after launch?" Vague answers here mean you will be paying for every text change forever. 3. "What integrations are in this quote?" Listed by name. "All standard integrations" is not a list. 4. "Who registers the domain and hosting, and in whose name?" 5. "Is technical SEO setup included, or extra?" Sitemap, schema, Search Console, redirects. 6. "What is explicitly not included?" The most useful question in the set. An experienced developer answers it immediately and in detail; that fluency is itself the signal. What is almost never included, and should be budgeted separately • Content writing. Someone must write the words. If it is not you and not a copywriter you hired, it is the developer, and that is real work — ₹1,500–₹5,000 per page. • Photography. Stock images make an Indian SME site look like every other Indian SME site. Real photographs of your premises, your team and your work do more for credibility than any design decision. ₹8,000–₹40,000 for a half-day shoot. • Ongoing SEO. The build includes technical setup. Getting you to rank is a separate, ongoing service. An honest developer states this plainly instead of implying the new site will rank by itself. • Maintenance. Plugin updates, security patches, backups, small changes. ₹3,000–₹15,000 a month. A website is not a one-time purchase, and treating it as one is how sites end up hacked or broken eighteen months later. • Paid advertising. Obviously separate, but people do conflate "we'll get you online" with "we'll get you customers". The ownership question, and why it matters more than price If you take one thing from this: the domain must be registered in your name, on your email address, with you holding the registrar login. I have taken over sites where the previous developer held the domain and had stopped responding. The business had printed the address on vehicles, boards and business cards. Recovering a domain from an unresponsive registrant is slow, sometimes impossible, and there is no shortcut. The business ended up buying a new domain and starting its search rankings from zero. Same principle for hosting and source code. Get all three in writing before the first payment. Any developer who objects has told you something important. A reasonable payment structure For a business website in the ₹40,000–₹3,00,000 range, this splits risk sensibly: • 40% advance — covers discovery and design • 30% on design approval — before the build starts • 30% on go-live — after you have seen it working Full payment upfront removes your only leverage. Full payment on completion is unreasonable to ask of a freelancer who has to eat during the eight weeks. The middle is fair to both. How long it actually takes A 10-page business site with a CMS and three integrations is four to six weeks of elapsed time, of which maybe fifteen working days are actual development. The rest is waiting — for feedback, for content, for photographs, for a decision about the phone number in the footer. The projects that run late are almost never late because of code. They are late because week three's design feedback arrived in week six. If you want a fast project, the most useful thing you can do is respond within two working days, every time. What good looks like six months later The site loads in under three seconds on a mid-range Android on mobile data. You can edit your own content. Enquiries arrive and you know where they came from because Analytics is set up. The contact form has not silently stopped working. Your developer answers when something breaks, at a price agreed in advance. You hold the domain, the hosting and the code. That is the whole deliverable. Everything else is decoration. Frequently asked questions What is included in web development services in India? Eight components: discovery and requirements, design, front-end build, back-end or CMS, integrations, testing, deployment with technical SEO setup, and handover with full ownership transfer. Content writing, photography, ongoing SEO, maintenance and advertising are normally separate. How much do web development services cost in India in 2026? ₹15,000–₹35,000 for a theme setup, ₹40,000–₹90,000 for a customised build, ₹1,00,000–₹3,00,000 for custom development, and ₹3,00,000 upward for a web application. Scope, not design quality, drives the difference. Why do quotes for the same website vary so much? Because "web development" is not a defined deliverable. A ₹22,000 quote and a ₹1,80,000 quote usually describe genuinely different amounts of work. Define your page count, integrations and editability, then re-request quotes against that list — the spread will narrow dramatically. Is technical SEO part of web development? Basic technical SEO — sitemap, robots.txt, schema markup, Search Console setup, page speed, and redirects from old URLs — should be part of any professional build. Ongoing SEO, content and link building are a separate service. Who should own the domain and hosting? You, without exception. Registered in your name, on your email, with you holding the login. A developer holding your domain is the most common way Indian businesses lose control of their own web presence. How long does a business website take to build? Four to six weeks for a 10-page site with a CMS and a few integrations, assuming you return feedback within two working days. Content and photography, not development, cause most delays.
